It's much more likely for Mexican people to have Amerindian mt-DNA haplotypes and European Y-DNA haplotypes because the vast majority of Mexico's belongs to the Mestizo group, which arose in many cases from Spanish colonists having offspring with their Amerindian female servants. On the other hand, racial purity laws that were historically present in America have made it much more likely for people to have non-European haplotypes ONLY if they identify as something other than white. In other words, a person in America who's part English and part Akan will usually classify themselves as "black" in America, but in Brazil, they'd be "pardo", and in Spanish-speaking Latin American countries, they would unquestioningly classify themsleves as "blanco".
It's a bit of an exaggeration, but the point regardless is that American people tend to overstate their brownness or blackness, whereas Latin Americans tend to overstate their whiteness and understate their Amerindian ancestry.
