What do you think of this sort of urban planning?
What do you think of this sort of urban planning?
I like it, uninitiated people might think that it's bug-tier density infrastructure (especially when seen from above), but it's actually very nice, spacious and green
10/10, make it more common
Hellish panopticon. Not a place to hide from the menacing "other." You probably have to pay some gypsy to take a piss. No trees, no flowers to smell, nothing of God's magnificent creation, only man, his hubris. A cattle farm in which you get shaken down for coins.
What is inside those cubes?
souless. I honestly prefer burger style suburbs, where I have my own detached house with garden and wayyy fewer people per square kilometer.
man I miss Barcelona, would love to go back but the last handful of times I went there it was to visit an ex so people might think I'm just going because of that reason

Looks like something made uninspiringly from Sim City
Smaller cubes
Similar to how I make my cities in Anno games.
That picture is the perfect example of civilization.
There is no place in the world where a big city is designed in such armonious and perfect way.
The worst thing is that shitty politicians have destroyed it bringing nafris which are the basic cause of 99% of the delinquency (including pickpocketing) in Barcelona.
how can an old world city look like this?
did they just raze down everything and build anew? even paris is a mess and it's been revamped from top to bottom
I think it's based but a lot of people cream over Barcelona's city planning, when this is actually NOT what the original planner (Cerdà) had in mind when he planned the city expansion back in the 19th century. The city was supposed to have way more parks and gardens in each block. It was literally greed by the city officials what eventually.
People also say we should build more to stop housing prices from going even higher (Barcelona is pretty unaffordable) but the city is already pretty much the densest city in Europe lol.
What a fuckin' hive. Hard to believe any Europeans willingly live like this, but I guess Spaniards aren't exactly "white" are they? Disgusting.
The grid is relatively new and was planned and built after the 19th century, and it was built over empty land. The old city still exists
fuck off nigger mutt
Whiter than you Muhammed.
The city was supposed to have way more parks and gardens
Soviet Bvll
what eventually killed it*. Land became too valuable and what was supposed to be reserved for parks and plazas was sold off to developers and built up. Eventually they started adding extra storeys too.
Doesn't Barcelona have many underground car parks?
there's unironically some connection between both. The ideas of cleaner, bigger cities with parks, plazas, mixing urban with natural lands, more natural light and better sanitation (sewage, running clean water) all enabled by new means of transport that allowed people to live far away from where they worked (trams and trains) brewed during the 19th century, which eventually evolved into the garden city movement that gave way to american-style suburbs in one side, as well as soviet city planning on the other.
Yeah, plus most of those buildings have their own parking in the inner parts of the blocks
The developments of the regulated and planned new housing projects of the 18th and 19th centuries are a really interesting topic for sure.
Yeah, plus most of those buildings have their own parking in the inner parts of the blocks
Nice, so the memes I've heard are true. Street parking is just the worst.
pragmatic but without sovl
why dont they just...build higher?
inferior
There's something kino about stroads to be honest.
urban planing
The what?
Jej
i hate it here so much
there are massive areas of these (like the I-405 king county corridor or the highway 19 area in FL in the pic) that cover nauseating amounts of land. nothing but wally worlds, mcdolands, best buys, the ocassional warehoue cluster, and that bar where a shooting happens a couple times a year
cityfags and butt-fuck nowhere fags are outliers; the vast majority of americans live near a huge goyrridor in a suburban hell
i went to canada once and your population areas were laid out slightly better. but our interstates kick canada 1s ass, to be fair. canada 1 can suck my dick
Sc*talans
We have the same stroads as you. Maybe slightly smaller.
Looks nice, will never happen here even in the big dense cities like NYC or Chicago due to political and cultural reasons
there's something really soulless about grids like that, organic development looks much nicer
True but the people in charge also liked having control over settlements. And this included the layout of streets and buildings therein.
There are a myriad of motives for such "ideal cities" - ranging from geometric symmetry to implementing new technologies to a maximized effectiveness.
distopian thirdie hell
the first world man lives in a green suburb
in the 16th century, star forts became common, and they are built around cannons.
basically a small gridded city with a central market place where the defenders put their cannons and wait for invaders to fill the streets, so they can blast them with grapeshot.
mannheim is an old german city, which has an old town shaped by being a former star fort. pic related is the old town center of mannheim, the "quadratestadt", or "square city".
i bet if you make the city part of the star fort big enough, you eventually won't need the bastion walls around it anymore. maybe that was the idea behind the barcelona layout.
new world forts were also often built this way, because it was the 16th century, and the city planners were all from europe.
I remember seeing a picture of a rich Scandinavian suburb years ago, looked very nice. But I just searched it up and apparently this is what Scandinavian suburbs look like, lol.
Riga old town by comparison

I've been there. For a bigger city it looks very nice, you can't see that from an aerial photograph
