don't know about the french, but isn't part of the reason that anglos specifically avoided intermarrying with the locals and had a much more hands-off approach to most of their empire? they also didn't have hundreds of years to shape more than half of the western hemisphere to their image. the period of african colonization was very short and ended before what happened to the new world could happen there.

I always find it bullshit how in the english maps they color entire countries of Africa but all the other colonial empires in Africa tend to just colour coastlines, like England had full control of countries as opposed to also having scattered colonies there like Portugal and Spain.
