Gdańsk has the sea (dirty and cold but still Poles love it) on one side and hills on the other side, nice views from there, but the city overall is cold, wet and windy for most of the year

Wrocław is sunnier and warmer and is close to the mountains, but doesn't have a sea

economically both cities are similar. Gdańsk has a bit higher cost of living because it's also a tourist resort (though tourism is mostly concentrated in the nearby town of Sopot)

as for beauty/aesthetics, that's a matter of taste, both cities have mostly post-WW2 reconstructed old towns, Wrocław has a little more original architecture.

well, truth is, none of Ostgebiete cities was really important for Germany, German culture and history. The whole Eastern Lands was mostly a rural impoverished intellectually backward area which contributed very little to Germany as a whole. That's why despite losing all of this region, it barely had any serious impact on German culture or economy after WW2.
And if we really look for the most important city out of all this area for German identity that would be probably Breslau nonetheless. Definitely not Danzig that only grew on wheat trade for PLC and didn't really create much cultural/intellectual output, nor was it that important for German history besides WW2. Konigsberg was a bit more important but still, if not for Kant, it would be pretty meaningless too.
