The first three crusades were all reactions to islamic aggression into christian territory (first one was a result of an appeal for help from the Byzantines, second one triggered by Edessa's fall to Zengids, third triggered by Saladin's recapture of Jerusalem.) This is not to say that they were entirely defensive or morally justified (there was massacre of civilians, incursion into non-christian territory, etc) but it wasn't some random expansionist aggression from the west like they teach in school, that's a bunch of ideological fluff, not actual history.

The fourth crusades and beyond were not defensive but were part of overall reciprocal warfare between the christian and muslim world they weren't just an unprovoked territorial power grab
