You can do 6 years of Italian in Primary School, the mandatory 4 years in High School and not know how to say a single sentence by the end of it.

It's the same here. It's a joke here that everyone forgets everything they know of Latin 5 seconds after their final exam. Even people that are able to translate things just fine during class instantly forget all of it. The only people I know that know fluent, as in actually fluent, Latin were my 60 year old Latin teacher who spent decades reading in it and speaking some and autists that are completely self-taught and never took it in school.

Those 6 months were the most pointless of my life, you don't really learn anything, you get paid a literal slaves wage and some of the positions/jobs you might be assigned to are torture relative to the wage you receive. Friend of mine did 30+ hour shifts for 4 days then got 3 days off, except he had to travel another 4 hours back home and then travel back to his post before 9am, so basically he had like 2.5 days off at best. You get like 400 euros per month BTW, i made more money when i was 14 and worked once a week at a supermarket sorting shelves on saturdays. You're basically just used as slave labor to keep the military barely running.

i was mentally ill long before and went there stupidly expecting to get better if i just push myself to be a man or some shit but didnt help at all and i felt even worse after because i couldnt imagine anything that i could do that would make things better so i just ended up giving up on life

Switzerland had a referendum once about conscription, boomers and women overwhelmingly supported it, while military aged men were against it, thus mandatory military services continued.
Basically as long as women have the right to vote, more than 50% of all voters will support it and to make things worse old farts are more than happy to send their own progeny to an early grave so they can keep going on cheap holidays to Thailand. Oh yeah and just as a side note: the most rabid supporters of Putin's war in Ukraine are also women and boomers, so it's not a western exclusive phenomenon.
You can bet your ass if other EU countries would hold a referendum about reintroducing conscription it would be brought back in no time due to the female and boomer vote.

I understand why we have mandatory conscription but ultimately it's somewhat pointless as our neighbors could still easily invade us just by sheer numbers and pretty much take all the non-mountainous land (where all the major cities are), the Army is just there to make it a harder and slower process
It's funny that in 2013 we voted whether mandatory conscription should remain and it didn't pass 60-40% yet when we recently changed our Head of Defence and there were talks of also making women serve some form of mandatory service people freaked out

So it's not like everyone age 18 gets called in.
Hell, my younger brother just said he's racist last year when he was called in and got sent home right away.
