How does whatever department know the information on a driver's license they issued is legit if there's no ID to check, or that you're actually old enough to drive? How does the social security know that it's actually you and not some made up person?

How is it complicated and more expensive? Here, when we are born we a get a birthcert with a unique ID number. At 12 years old, we get a chipped ID card (myKad) with that number. At 18 we get our final version of the card as an adult. This card is used for all official business with the government, banks, school, hospital, police, voting etc. The entire system works and since the chipped card was introduced 20 years ago, very difficult to falsify. For example, when opening a new bank account, we insert the card into a reader and have a fingerprint reader verify our fingerprint based on the stored national registry database. For a country to function properly, you need a trusted national ID system, especially for voting.

and most people live in suburbs because suburbs are actually very nice and great for raising families

the American definition of a city includes massive suburbs and seems to be more about population than any type of architecture or zoning.

there's plenty of cities in america where cars arent needed
i grew up near san francisco and you absolutely dont need a car if you live in that city
people use cars cause cars are very nice and convenient
