Is it normal to look people in the eye when passing them? I'm a socially retarded autist so I don't know, I generally avoid it because I don't want to come aross as creepy but I don't think that's applicable to all germans.

Here in 3rd world europe, i think its somewhat common but can also be awkward. I think its ok if someone glances or looks at you, but not stare unless they have a reason. But when Russians came here, even in their eyes it's visible that they are colder and hold less eye contact than us.

People don’t look you in the eye as they walk past you in America, too. I tend to find myself people watching a lot, so I’d often strain myself to look ahead because I’m always under the impression that I’d appear creepy otherwise. It wasn’t until I went to Poland and noticed that people often stare at each other that I learned that it’s a cultural thing—or that people over there are generally more extroverted/curious about others. America is more introverted than people would be led to believe, I guess.

I used to talk to a german woman at work and from my experience most germans or at least northern germans it's not that they are that serious but they are pretty square minded. She literally told me the same that everyone was pretty serious and boring but I do think some of them have a sense of humor, just that it's also kinda simple and straight to the point. I think some germans have a bit of a childishness or innocence to their personality with I enjoy too, it makes them easy to read and I think it can be kinda cute sometimes. They usually avoid sarcasm and double meanings too

Basically when I think of germans I think about Werner Herzog. I think this type of personality may filter some extroverts that try to be overly friendly head-on and if the other person doesn't reply with the same type of behavior they take it as them being rude or too serious but it's not necessarily like that
