I've been twice. The first time I went my girlfriend and I were in a cross country road trip from PA to Cali back to PA and we almost skipped Rushmore thinking who cares. But we decided to go since it was nearby and it actually was better than I expected. I always thought it would suck so my expectations were low. It's way cooler in person than I ever thought it could be. Also, Crazy horse is pretty cool but you can't get up close.

South Dakota is so underrated. Badlands, Black Hills, interesting Indian reservations. I did a trip where I just spent 15 days camping and hiking in ND, SD, and NE and again passed it went for 30 minutes and enjoyed it still. If you're in the area it will probably exceed your expectations. I wouldn't visit SD just for it but SD actually has a ton to offer, super underrated state.
