Italians due to sheer number probably made the most contributions to improve Brazil's social and economic standing, but Germans are likely the ones who contributed the most proportionally to their numbers. Honorable mentions: the Portuguese, the Japanese, the Jews and the Lebanese.

I know it's anecdotal, and maybe I'm naïve, but I can't think of any immigrant group in the U.S. that clings to their former country the way Mexicans do. I've never seen Indians or Chinese waving their former country's flag screaming about "reconquista" and speaking Hindi/Chinese all the time instead of English.

Their hospitals are fine, but our greatest physicians tended to be mostly of Portuguese, Italian and German ancestry (Oswaldo Cruz, Vital Brazil, Carlos Chagas, Adolfo Lutz, Miguel Nicolelis...). Maybe some Jews too, but our Jews aren't really Levantine, they're mostly Sephardim from Portugal and a few Ashkenazim from Eastern Europe and Germany.
