I reckon there's probably more happening behind closed doors than what we're aware of. It's an open secret that India are seething that Britain has sovereignty over land in what - if India ever gets its shit together - would be their sphere of influence. I don't know if it's a coincidence that the UK-India trade deal happened within a month of the UK handing over the Chagos islands, but it's something to think about.
There's also a lot of rumours that the Biden government put a lot of pressure on the UK to give up the islands too, also to win goodboy points with India.
