Trick or treat used to be just as much about the social experience of kids going out and exploring their neighborhoods together in fun disguises as it was about collecting candy. If parents came along they usually followed far behind so the kids wouldn't be embarrassed or distracted. These new customs are like a weird simulacrum of trick or treat where families just get together and trade candy and play in a safe retard-proof environment. Add on to that the total consumerization of Halloween and the whole ritual seems completely meaningless as a unique thing anymore. It's just another "fun activity" to keep the kids occupied while their parents pretend not to be dead inside.

I remember my first Halloween after moving down to the boonies of rural Maryland. Not a single trick or treater in sight. It was surreal.

This comes up every Halloween; it's for rural areas where it takes 5 minutes to walk to the closest neighbor. Houses are too far apart, so they all take their kids to a parking lot to do this. I personally think it's cute.
