Dalit isn't a real thing, it's a colonial era term, a name for a large number of very disparate communities that practiced ritually impure professions or were from lineages of people that practiced ritually impure professions or were serfs. There's another idea from colonial times that caste correlates to race, this is sort of true sometimes since communities would often move from region to region without mixing, like the Brahmins who migrated from the North to many different parts, and in the case of untouchables they were often tribal forest people who were integrated into mainstream Hindu society in its lowest orders.
There's only very minute correlation between caste and skin colour, which is another misconception I've seen in foreigners, especially among the Chinese for some reason, and even then most of it's from the fact that lower castes would be poorer and more likely to work in the sun (as there ancestors did for a couple thousand years). Some higher and lower castes will deny and exaggerate this difference for different reasons, but it's really not that great, varies more by region than anything.
And this wasn't really exclusive to India either, just far more pronounced and longer lasting here with religious sanction.

Europe had a caste system in the middle ages that was pretty much on the level of the Indian one. The only difference is the Catholic Church made the priesthood celibate, but like, in Ireland in the 10th century you had basically every priest passing down the office from father to son like it was a feudal holding. You can make the argument that Catholic "Brahmins" existed there.
