Yeah Russians are generally friendly.
In smaller towns people are less used to foreigners so you might get more attention there.
I recommend visiting Yakutsk to see the Lena pillars, also you can visit lake Baikal and Kamchatka. Kamchatka is really a great place, like Russian Yellowstone but also with crabs, salmon roe and walruses.

This is our unique phenomenon. Glaciers under houses. They don't melt until July, even when it's +25 outside
I've seen there is some chunk of ice and snow not far from Yakutsk, which doesn't melt at summer at all.

We have middle of nowhere towns like that. (Obviously not quite as middle of nowhere). But they're always built around some nuclear power plant or mine or some such major employer that pays good wages.
Our town was built for fur tax collection in 1632
Now it serves mainly as the administrative centre of the republic, and all the industry just serves the town itself and doesn't export.
