how do you get into colleges

flag
you just need to finish a higher tier school in secondary school and you can generally any enter any fachhochschule (college) you want. same for university and eth, but you need to finish a 'gynasium' which is the highest tier secondary school. you can also enter after an apprenticeship if fulfill some criteria.

the schools are all public so the tier you get into is merit based and money won't get you far, thankfully. private school are also generally looked down upon here.

You can not just get into ETH with any gymnasium education stop lying ffs it’s equivalent to MIT you need to have straight As to even qualify for the acceptance lottery

each uni hosts its own exams, but a lot of prgrams these days will accept you purely on your matura grade, because they have spots to fill

not true
t. went to eth with average grades

Every country that has this elite level autism has those requirements, most countries just dont have those
Which is funny because almost none of the 20th century polymaths or anyone historically important would get into any of these elite colleges these days that just reward asian tiger mom behavior and cheating

or maybe it is true for foreign students, but for swiss students it is just another university when it comes to getting into it.

Look up an early 20th century MIT entry exam and it is laughably easy
Meanwhile these days burgers have to go through a series of humiliation rituals to even just be able to pay to study at that college where at least half the people are going to be foreigners anyway
Always funny hearing Americans describe the process

I volunteered at this campaign, raised money for this cause and sold cookies on the street after, lead the local cheerleader team at my hometown now can I please pay 70k?

Like what lol

Look up an early 20th century MIT entry exam and it is laughably easy

What was the percentage of people who even graduated high school back then? Cause it would make sense if it was very low.

It is true though. Kinda lame Americans have to do that.

Yeah of course it is hard to compare historical data, etc. these days people also have more resources to learn but still.
Also the system does not seem to be too successful if you consider the amount of foreigners at the cutting edge companies in the US

the hysteria around college applications for kids probably peaked when I was in highschool. Instead of learning advanced English and grammar those classes where relegated to learning to craft the "best" letter usually based on some fabricated or embellished story. For many students it is basically a religion to master the SAT and score a PERFECT score while also being part of as many extra curricular actives as possible. Students would pad out ridiculous lists of activities that has loosely ceremonial roles. we where assigned books to read about other students who did just the same process years prior. We also had this ceremony scholarships awarded / grants to each student would be announced publicly in an auditorium infront of the entire student body, it really drove home the waste and beaucratic graft of the entire process, it took hours just listing names and awards and ultimately no matter how many awards someone got and all the massive amounts of cash they received it was all performative as none of these students would be gunning for these universities grants anyway they would be applying to the ivy leagues or whatever. the there was a day you where supposed to wear the uniform or insignia of whatever institution you where deciding to go to, the final sort of bragging rights for those who managed to get thier golden goose.

typical public schools you just apply and unless you're a literal retard you'll get in
the "elite" schools are the ones where you need to be a BLM activist and pledge allegiance to Israel and have taken gotten a 5 on 10 different AP tests

so higher grades still means better chances if get it right?
what makes it more funny is that eth an elite level institution by all metrics but it is not really difficult for a swiss citizen to enter it, so it is closer to your 20th century requirements.
butvgraduating from eth is an entire different beast however.

how do you get into colleges

you ask.

Not having elite level unis is great if you want to go to the US because then they cannot have that expectation
All the people I know who ended up working in the US went to literal what local colleges here

Yes. Usually they calculate a score based on your exam score/matura grade + grades in relevant subjects for the degree that you took in high school. You get in based on how high your score is.

you have to finish high school with at least a 4.5 average (it's called NEM) and then you have to pass university admission tests (maths, history, spanish, and optionally biology)
depending on your NEM from high school and your score on the tests, you can apply to the career you want. the most prestigious unis (such as católica and chile) require higher scores

We have a very similar system here
Either they looked at your avg grades in the last two years (11th and 12th grade) and that was 50% of your score then the next 50% was the two exams that were required (each field requires two exams like if you want to study pharmacy physics or chemistry and biology)
OR what you could you if you were a lazy student like me is simply you could add together the percentage of your two exams then multiply it by two. this way your grades did not matter at all. You would also get extra points for doing the advanced exams or having a language exam but they had a capped score for that.

Since then they sort of privatised all the schools here so I'm not exactly sure how it works now but I think they all can give you points for whatever they want like if you have an experience in this or that and schools can set higher requirements (like only allow people with advanced exams) but the system is fundamentally the same or similar at least

what makes it more funny is that eth an elite level institution by all metrics but it is not really difficult for a swiss citizen to enter it, so it is closer to your 20th century requirements.

interesting that graduating is much harder than admission. here unis will try their best to get you to graduate if admitted because it looks better for them (or at least get you to final year so theyve extracted the maximum amount of money from you)

absolute clown country, why don't they just have entrance exams?

any university outside the HELLsinki you can get in with entrance exam if you do even half decent on it

in my case you just applied for whatever program you wanted to attend. pick minimum three universities with those programs and apply to them. If your grade 12 grades were good enough you'd get enrolled into them

You finish high school and make the national entrance exam (Enem) or the uni-specific entrance exam. With your score in that exam you apply for a place in one course in a certain public university. Your score will be put in a ranking according to the number of places available. If you scored high enough to make the cut you enter. Public universties are tuition-free but you usually have to pay for everything outside tuition or enrollment (food, transportation, materials).

Alternatively you can enter in a private university. These have their own entrance exams and you obviously need to pay for them. Usually this is the second option for people who failed to enter public unis and have money.

i think its becuase universities dont want good students
they wanted news stories. Things that would go viral, create celebrity students with backstories already built in, elaborate stories for which the universities can garner attention, with attention money and fame. many of these degrees which have no practical application are sold like lifestyles to parents you cant sell a lifestyle with some bookish 4.0 student you need the weird essay kid with personality. Ultimately university in America is a sort of monetary child sacrifice, the last and final moment of parenting whereby the parents make a deal with the devil, they exchange 400,000 dollars or some other ridiculous some of money for the mental relief of being able to wipe thier hands and no longer care or concern themselves with whatever happens to thier child. If thier baby turns fucked up, ideologically captured, fails to get a real job or turns to ruin well in thier minds there was nothing the parents could do , they did the thing they payed the money the shear absurd amount of waste they spent conditions them to belief this lie fully and everything else is given up to the university to finish the job of whatever parenting they did. college is America is babysitting and many jobs continue this infancy for those lucky enough to get them.

all universities use the first exams to weed out the weak students, but eth is notorious for being brutal throughout the entire education.
on the bright side you get a top notch education with really good lecturers, an extremely good network and a degree which opens you every door.

Either they looked at your avg grades in the last two years (11th and 12th grade) and that was 50% of your score then the next 50% was the two exams that were required (each field requires two exams like if you want to study pharmacy physics or chemistry and biology)

This is basically exactly how it works here. Wouldn't be surprised if it's some legacy left over from the Cold War days.

Alternatively you can enter in a private university. These have their own entrance exams and you obviously need to pay for them. Usually this is the second option for people who failed to enter public unis and have money.

based public university country.

Federal unis and some state unis are considered the best. Private universities are usually much less prestigious except some church universities.

Standard nationwide exam on different subjects (you need to finish HS to take it) that happens once every year
You also get scores based on your grades and relative position to your classmates during HS

Getting an at least decent score in Enem is hard as shit btw

How do uni sizes like this even work? lol

If you compare this with the previously posted chart you'll see that the vast majority of applicants can't enroll in anything kek

Fully online and fully automated grading

Didn't read

in-person

Even though our model is asian-tier soul crushing I think it's much better than tying your whole future to your high school GPA or nonsense like admission letters and extracurriculars. At least you can try the Enem again every year

the second one is 3.5 million people in person

sob story essays

"Let me tell you about your country" kek
you dont have to do that though. that is almost exclusively for ivy league and private schools.

you can pretty much get into any state public school just by submitting an application, having your transcripts, and paying.

It probably has like 15 different campuses
