If you ask any Italian when their country achieved its economic peak they will say 1980 and surprisingly, it's the era of 20% annual inflation in that country, yet they somehow think it's that how it should be.
That's why the Euro makes no sense because it tries to combine two completely different ways of thinking about a "good" monetary policy - anti-inflational Germanic and pro-inflational Mediterranean.
