I think they fucked it a bit with the staging. Too much darkness throughout. When you saw how the jury voted, they seemed to put a lot of value in to visual elements, which is why that one song with the giant scorpion did so well with jury because it had the highest budget put into it, but got zero from televote because the song was nothing.

From what I’ve seen on Twitter (for whatever that’s worth), there’s quite a bit of negative buzz about Austria’s staging, and songs with operatic elements often score poorly at Eurovision. I’m French and obviously rooting for Louane, and I’m curious to see how her staging comes across on TV. France’s problem is that we tend to present performances that are too static; I just hope we’ll be swept up for the full three minutes, because that’s what a power ballad like this needs.

Just from the ROTW clip, Austria have made the mistake of exposing JJ’s weakness in the staging. He can obviously sing, but the kid has zero charisma. So they can only give him really basic and repetitive motions to do. The whole thing might just make him look like an inexperienced kid.
In the end, they probably should have gone minimalist like Switzerland have so focus is entirely on the voice.

And I just don’t get why Austria is still rated so high by the bookies, while France actually dropped a spot (it’s back to 4th behind the Netherlands). I like what the Dutch are bringing, but it’s not mind-blowing either. Basically, after listening to the current top three in the odds, I’m just not getting any real “winner vibe” at all…
