honestly seems to me that Americans don't find Americanness to be a compelling enough identity and have to find a meaningful identity somewhere else. But American is definitely an identity with a very unique culture. My guess is that their Americanness has become meaningless because of how it's an identity that wants to be more than simply cultural, it wants to be all encompassing, it wants to include other peoples like blacks or asians or hispanics, it wants to be a way of life, it wants to be political and even economic, etc
And so when this identity is all encompassing, it loses all meaning, and when it gets very specific, it alienates.
Luckily in about 20 years, as our ethnicities are eradicated and replaced by rootless cosmopolitan slop, we will understand each other :)

Now because of social media and how much people love bashing on America, including Americans, people don't want to have full association with an American identity because they feel it makes them stupid or lesser.
