I don't know about that specific shape, but similar things have been looked at for nearly 100 years.
The biggest hurdle is cost, then flooding people's land.
But it also just wouldn't do much, there's not enough gain to it. The interior is hot due to sun angle, and it's dry due to ocean currents, prevailing winds, a wide continent, lack of mountains (and overall height above sea level) and lack of rivers.
If we add rivers we still have 4 other major reasons for the interior to be dry and you can't change ocean currents, winds and continent size.

I worked with the forestries in morocco and studied how even the driest corners will get some robust growth of resilient local vegetation unless there's some dickhead goats to eat eveything, goats are the absolute worst, not only do they eat anything that grows but they also pull out the roots, causing massive soil degradation, but sheep and cows aren't much better either.
I could link some studies by tldr: the whole australian interior could be turned into grasslands in a matter of a decade or two and eventually slowly reforested as the soil recovers

North of australia is in the desert area, and it is greener the more to the south you go. Above it in the south-asian isles, you will find rainforest. And on new zealand you will find milder grasslands, with the usual seasons, winter, spring, summer, and autumn, but they have winter in july, and summer in december. The californian peninsula is surrounded by water, but that does not create a lot of humidity, because all of the water that evaporates rockets high up in the atmosphere.

There's also a lot of rainforest and tropical stuff here, mostly on the north and north east. I've never been to the north west so idk if it's the same there, but theoretically it should be.

South is where it gets green and cold, with Victoria and Tasmania being the coldest states complete with snow in some areas. Tasmania itself looks kind of like New England (pic related).
