I basically agree, but it’s never going to happen. I sometimes wish that the original vision of Mandatory Palestine (which would have created a unified Palestinian Arab state in the Transjordan, across the Jordan, in what is now, well, Jordan) had been a realistic option.

I don’t approve of treating people inhumanely, and I think more Israeli governments than not have been profoundly inhumane towards local Arabs. But I also don’t think there’s any future for any State of Palestine that’s unwilling to acknowledge the inevitability of a State of Israel. Of the two entities as they now exist, Israel, while in a lot of ways profoundly shitty, is the more viable, and local claims on the land broadly equally legitimate. Even if permanent 1967 borders secured by blue helmets could ever be achieved and accepted (given that some whackass Yids will never concede the West Bank, just as some whackass Arabs will forever reject any and all Jews anywhere in the region), it doesn’t leave Palestine with enough contiguous space to make a functional country.

So whatever happens, I do not expect to see a functioning two-state solution in my lifetime, and feel strongly that leaders on both sides are doing nothing but making shit worse. But for now, as easy and even justifiable as it may be to hate them, and as evil as some of their policies are and have been, the Israelis are more competent. Yeah, West Bank settlers need to be removed, and governments should stop giving them money and guns, but any future Palestine is going to have to compromise more than it wants to (and more than any of its would-be leaders seem willing to consider) if it wants to be a real country.
