this whole thing became way too overblown. here are some facts:

1) the vast majority of italians never knew how the ius sanguinis law works and don't have a formed opinion on the diaspora. most of them became aware of it because of recent news
2) out of the 80 million descendants, only aroud 1 million of them got their citizenship recognized. a literal non-issue in the big picture and the government is likely using that to diver attention from something else
3) this is a move completely pushed by the government and not by the population. coincidentally our biggest state tv were transmitting a bunch of documentaries regarding the subject in the last weeks as an attempt to inflict awareness to the population
4) most of those who get their citizenship recognized stay in their very own country of origin and eventually use it to travel to the USA visa-free
5) this is an emergency decree with validity of 60 days, no law was actually changed yet. it still has to be voted by the parliament and get judged by the constitutional court

You have to pay 160 dollars and basically travel to SP, Rio, Brasilia, Recife or Porto Alegre which is far away for most brazilians, for the possibility to get a visa. And there you have to basically prove to the officer that you are going to respect the law, have enough money and not going to overstay your visa. They treat you like shit and after getting a visa you get interviewed by the USCIS when you arrive at the US which they can deny your entry

I do think it was ridiculous that you can claim citizenship with just a great great grandparent with no other ties to the country, but the law is a little too restrictive now. It should be limited to grandparents and maybe put a language requirement if you’re trying to claim citizenship beyond that. Also not being able to pass on your Italian citizenship to your kids unless you lived in Italy is too much imo

The USA issues several types of visa: tourism, study, work, etc. Work visas are the most difficult to get because you need to have a job offer and other requirements.

To get a tourist visa, you need to fill out a million forms, pay a fee of 150 us dollars and go to one of the few US embassies in the country where you will be interviewed by an American person to whom you need to prove you have means to provide for yourself during your trip and that you have reasons to return (job, family, property, whatever). They can deny you a visa even if you have all the evidence in the world simply for not liking your face and you can't appeal.

And then, even if you have a visa, after arriving in the US, you will be interviewed by customs agent who will basically ask you all the same things. Where are you going, why are you here, where will you stay, how long will you stay, will you return... They can just tell you no and send you back in the next plane regardless of anything.
