If your 'culture' is trad larps with kimono, togas, or somehow acting like subsistence farmers from 200 years ago are related to you now living in a compact city or suburb on the Internet then that means your country is pimping itself out to tourists.

The culture of those subsistence farmers hasn't survived beyond local cultural practises like holy sites, folk music and religious practises including superstitions, the vibrant Edo period urban culture and the classic Heian period culture which are a part of their heritage due to the rapid urbanisation in Japan in the post Muromachi period is the culture that people care about because it is Japanese culture

It had a genuine cultural purpose other than serving as a prop. I just can't see how people treating a country as a museum is cultural. Heian and Muromachi had no connection because by the time Heian ended they replaced their older forms of Buddhism with new ones coming from Ming. If culture could evolve back then, why did it stop? They also changed it again in Edo when they adopted Confucianism, completely altering the system and reverting samurai into a bureaucrat class. And yes the old form of subsistence farming went away they use industrial agriculture.
