yes, haha... YES
since 2019, but only passively since 2022

the Duden is good

I can't think of any German learning regulars other than the serb and the american, and they've both been learning it for a really long time as far as I know.

old french does the same thing. some words have different forms in the nominative and oblique too, like ber/baron, or pute/putain

I am still learning German but I also teach it at a university level

I speak it at a C1 level, but I don't have my licentiate at said level yet

If I could enroll in the Pontifico Istituto Biblico (though I am a Catholic, a convert no less), I would. Idk how and whether I am eligible to do so though.

Old challenge: none. lol.

This was written hundreds of years ago.

Clay is superior to everything else and I will defend it till my dying breath.
Instead of a pen, I have a stylus, which works great, but only sometimes.
What do you mean it all burned down, all my contracts were in that house!

What did you think that I was, that you have given my office to somebody else in my absence? (AbB 9 1)
What is this that you have sent me bad fish and that one has detained the boy in the storehouse and one has let him go away before I myself had heard it and had given a written order? (AbB 14 100)
Have you really obtained the authority to remove and install people? Removing and installing people is in fact only my responsibility! (AbB 14 218)

hey it pays for my PhD so I ain't complaining anon

that and I genuinely enjoy it, I have fun teaching the students and they seem to like me as an instructor (even if they call me professor though that isn't my job title)

We need to start learning Afrikaans here in the US.

When did you start learning German btw? Do you think this timeline is realistic?

Sure but the fact that nominative singular/plural is completely flipped from what makes sense, and only occurs for masculine nouns, just seems designed to trip you up

I learned German on my own on-and-off for about a couple years, but then again my native tongue is English and not Portuguese. Only took formal classes in German (beginning with Intermediate II) in undergrad

It's reasonable but I'd have to figure out what the native tongue of the guy who's doing this then

t. Master's in Linguistics, starting my PhD in Linguistics in August

Ah a fellow gradual school member. Students calling you professor is pretty funny, so naïve to the long and tortuous route to that title

I told them they can call me Mr. [surname] but eventually I just gave in because they wouldn't call me anything but professor

It's one of them things yknow

lapicera

lápiz*
lapicera = pencil case

como escribir esto?

cómo se escribe esto?

lo hás como eso

hazlo así
"cómo eso" doesnt feel natural at all, but if you let it out on accident you would be understood

cual pagina es eso?

understandable, but "en qué página está?" feels more natural

lápiz* instead of lapicera
i feel like "aguja" means stylus when it comes to a record player, i think here its referring to an ancient stylus, in which case the word would be "estilo"

or alternatively
para que lo corte y se lo meta...

Do you choose a language family to study? Like Germanic, Celtic, etc? Linguistics is super fascinating. I love the Celtic languages. I would love to have a decent level of Basque as well

I just tell them to use my first name, which they're more willing to do since I usually am just a TA. I think it's something about being the main instructor of a class that makes them think they gotta use professor.

But to keep it more on topic, what sort of linguistics do you study?

en el culo al gobierno

now that i think about it "por el culo" feels more natural

napenda kusoma

Nina kalamu

Kwanini hawezi kuja?

How come the German learners here are usually head and shoulders above others ITT when it comes to proficiency/progress? Just something I noticed over the years.

Not the same anon, but I've been at it seriously since the pandemic or so with some prior inconsistent studying prior to that (read: duolingo), and I'd say this is more or less realistic, although I think he had the major advantage of living there, and moreover at a time (15 years ago) where english proficiency amongst germans was probably markedly lower.

I'd really like to spend a couple months there at some point in the future as I feel like I'll never master the speaking aspect otherwise.

(was too lazy after the challenge to respond as I normally do in german)

english proficiency

You might be able to speak with zoomers and academics in English. But if you're out in the countryside asking for directions, if you need to ask a bus driver if he stops at a certain location, if you need a plumber or someone who fixes your car ... well, you better speak German. English is compulsory subject in all schools, but with those of lower education (and lower paid jobs) you can't really count on that they still remember English from school.

In Germany, everything is dubbed German. Everything. TV shows, films, documentaries, foreign news segments. If you live in Germany, you won't have to learn English, you can get by all of your life just knowing German.

Tы этo пишeшь вoт тaк.

Slavs use the reflexive in an impersonal meaning here, which would be "how does one write this" in english

post it anon, I don't know russian but I'm curious to see it

What’s the end goal of learning it though?
Does the literature interest you or are you just in it for an aesthetic notebook?

I wanted to be able to outpoot an ancient language, started sumerian but found akkadian much prettier
the end goal is a library of tablets about various things

Fair enough desu. That’s essentially my goal in learning Latin. I’m curious as to whether or not you can recognise Semitic cognates in Arabic and Hebrew, it’s not everyday you can ask an Akkadianknower a question

sometimes, but they're not too common, since akkadian got hit pretty hard by sumerian loans, and it's eastern semitic, so quite a bit further away from the two than either of them are from each other. but I had a bit of a moment a few years into akkadian where I saw the mene, mene, tekel, upharsin phrase from the bible and went
