I always liked the band geeks episode because its one of the few times you see squidward genuinely happy.

This one was cooler in my memory than it actually is, rewatching. I guess its biggest quality is just its unusual vibe and maybe being relatable to kids afraid of getting lost in the city

There's a later episode in which Squidward is always suspiciously happy (looks like pic related) on the second Wednesday of the month I think. Spongebob and and Patrick follow Squidward and find out that on that day, Squidward always goes to a meeting of the secret "Cephalopode Lodge". And of course Spongebob and Patrick then ruin the only thing Squidward lives for and get him kicked out.

How they got away with that on something rated TV-Y is beyond me

I have once seen an English film with Polish sound, and they had one (single!) guy read all the lines of all of the actors, men and women, for one and a half hours.

I know it's probably the cheapest way to dub films and TV shows, but how can Eastern Europeans stand this?

Back in the analogue days, the TV remote had a button to select the 1st or 2nd sound channel on films or shows that weren't stereo. The 2nd channel often was the original sound, i.e. English or French, which would have been great for learning had I been in the age for that back then. With the change to digital TV you still get the option of an additional sound channel, but now that's not the original sound anymore, but "audio description". Like they literally get a guy to describe what's on the screen what blind people can't see. "There is a chair. The detective sits down on the chair and grabs a newspaper. He reads it."

Commies were very suspicious of those who spoke English, because the only legal way to learn English for a long time was in college as an added course and those who enrolled were all vetted and a good chunk of them were later inducted into the secret police to listen to western radio chatter. So, if you were caught speaking English outside of college or listening to any piece of media in English, authorities quickly arrived to ask you some routine questions, because ordinary folks were supposed to understand it, unless they were foreign agents of course. Since most the population and by most I mean more than 98% couldn't speak English, foreign movies translated via voice overs, as dedicated voice actors weren't a thing back then. Getting caught didn't get you an instant jail sentence, but you were put on a list and got a 'guardian angel' to make sure you won't go astray.

We didn't have that in West Germany, but I darkly remember the cold war. We had siren tests on every saturday at 11. (THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING! ATOMIC WAR! follow by ALL CLEAR.) We had fighter jets flying like 300 feet over our houses and schools and breaking the sound barrier - which actually shattered a few windows. We weren't allowed to take pictures around military installations. Aerial photos had to be cleared by a censorship authority first. And of course we had special yellow traffic signs for NATO tanks everywhere, indicating the major defence routes and for civil bridges how much loads they could take. (Tanks are heavy.)

The modern anxiety about terror seems so unreal by comparison. It’s a bit surprising to think that a western society you’d have expected to have acclimated to the concept of violence and foreign attack reacted as irrationally as it did to the 9/11 attacks. Although I suppose people felt they were through the worst of it after the Soviet Union fell, and were caught off guard.

Well, if the Russians are coming, there will be a warning, and there used to be underground bunkers where you could take shelter. If a muslim drives an SUV into a group of people or starts stabbing you, there is no warning.
Statistically there are 12 deadly muslim stabbings in Germany each day, so the danger is a lot more real. This btw. is also the reason for the right-wing party AfD getting second most votes in the last elections. Whenever a muslim mass murder occurs, all politicians say "something must change". But the established parties then continue filling our country with more such people. AfD is the only party that has demanded deportations of those that have become violent criminals while staying here.
