My city spend like a 500 million dollars on one and the busses that go a similar route get higher ridership. Its seems its just a ploy to get middle class people to use it instead of the 'icky' bus.
Busses can pivot around obstacles, such as an illegally parked car. Trams cannot.

Even if the bus is better transit service, real estate developers like trams better. They're more permanent and sexier, an they can advertise that the apartment/office building they built has access to rail service.

Well the main problem is certainly that the USA is incapable of building infrastructure. That's a pretty massive subject, for more on that read 'Abundance'.

But anywhere in the world, I don't see how trams are a significant advantage over busses to justify construction costs if we're talking purely from a transportation perspective. They look nicer though.

It typically helps to check signage to ensure you're going in the correct direction.

I also ended up in a tram yard once but that was not my fault though

I take the tram even when the bus is actually more convenient because to get on the bus I have to transfer at the bus depot where there's a bunch of vagrants and every once in a while someone gets killed there.

The tram is a nicer experience.
