I’ve been to many seminar and conference talks with researchers from American universities. The ratio of competent talented researchers to nepotistic babbling retards is the same everywhere decent. My own advisor was from UPenn and he was a drooling retard compared to our group’s postdoc from Stanford. None of that prestige or name recognition did jack shit to change that.

True but it’s difficult to judge real character and sift the competence from mediocrity at a job interview but it’s easy to know when you can just find out how difficult a school is to get in and how high it is ranked. This is what makes the Ivy League the golden ticket on just about anything. It’s all about reputation.
