1984 is bad because it's starting to lose it's relatability since it was motivated by a sense of paranoia that we grow further from as years go on. LotR is the foundation for much of modern fantasy and as such it feels more bland since everything used it as a schemata.

1984 is literally part of the curriculum in English classes all over the world; we read it in English class in 7th grade. And there are literal Tolkien scholars in many universities, including professors at Oxford. But sure, act like a contrarian if you want.
