You do NOT suffer in Sweden. I always have to hike alone because I don't have friends and my brother lives at the other side of the country.

There may not be mosquitos but there are always ticks ready to turn you into a paralyzed vegetable.

Hiking alone can be nice. I used to do that a lot when I was younger.
I recommend having a satellite phone though if you go far.

Yeh, I think about 75% of the land is covered by mountains. There were people just 50 years who'd live and die on a village sitting at the slopes of a mountain.
My grandma's idea of a foreigner is someone living 30km away on the other side of the mountain.

this. every inch of our countries has at one point been logged, could be 500 years ago or 50 years ago, animals or hikers cant tell the difference today, its just bs to seethe over it. im curious if the transition from old manual horse or tractor logging to modern machines will make a difference? i think it will be better, today they leave all branches and offcuts so they dont pull out nearly as much biomass. the old school way was to remove everything and make it clean before replanting.

Depends on the location. Heavy logging areas planted just for logging usually get pretty wrecked after a harvest. But then again, they are made for that specific reason.
Wild logging here has a lot more rules and regulations now so the damage is minimal.

I grew up in Virginia where the forests are swampy spider nests. I want to experience sovlful woodland.

your pic related is what i think will regrow as an old growth forest much faster than a clean stripped forest using lighter methods, its the materials rotting away on the ground and uneven terrain that gives old growt their characteristic undergrowth. its also less important to plant trees in clean lines with modern machines, they just move them down anyway.

He's right, most german woods aren't genuine wilderness (there's virtually no wilderness in germany). The only countries that have significant genuine wild forest coverage in the modern era are canada, russia, the us, the far upper parts of northern europe, and some parts of south america.

I was hoboing through germany not that long ago and had a shocking amount of difficulty finding a place to lay my bivy that wasn't in sight of a walking path. Trying to set up any sort of stealth camp completely out of the question.

It's not too hard to walk off trail in the sierras. I was born in lake tahoe and did it all the time. It's literally impossible in a lot of places in oregon/washington. Cliffs everywhere, thick impenetrable foliage.
