Italian became widespread only in the 60s due to television. Before then (and for a good couple decades after that) most people who did not go to university (which was the vast majority) spoke dialects, and our old dialects (not the diluted ones spoken today) were basically unintelligible outside a 100km radius.
The only ones who had some vague concept of being italian were the aristocrats first and then the bourgeois.
All globalization would do is create a global oligarchy that has no loyalty to anyone but themselves, and every reason to eliminate any competition to their rule as fast as possible. The EU is a great example of this, as rather than becoming a flourishing superstate they half-ass it and are a loose collection of countries in an economic union dependent on the US for protection.

Besides "trade and GDP go up" there is absolutely nothing that Poles, Balts and Nordics have in common with Spaniards, Portuguese, Belgians or Italians. We have a different geography, different economies, different security environment, different priorities and things to worry about.
It takes 8 months to make one decision on the EU level because there needs to be a consensus and countries don't want to change it because that would mean Berlin and Paris deciding for everyone else.
