In regards to EU, this is how it was explained to me: the US does have sales tax, but it's applied state by state basis, and only for American products. If an individual purchases an item from the EU, they do not have to pay a sales tax. In essence, this puts the EU at an unfair advantage, as it's harder for American companies to compete with the price if their goods incur a flat additional percentage of whatever the sales tax in the specific state happens to be.

That is in no way saying that the EU is to blame for the US unwillingness or incompetence to tax their own citizens, so it's absolutely misleading to call it the EU ripping the US off, but there still is still in place what is essentially a "tariff". Note that I'm not entirely certain this is 100% true, it was just how it was explained to me in some other thread. But it would be perfectly on brand for Americans to blame Euros for their own failures desu
