The Guido subculture is a distinct thing. It's not Italian, it's something American-born just as much as Appalachian culture.
It formed organically out of melding of Italian and American influences.
Both subcultures add to the richness of America as a whole.

A lot of them have. But even then I don't think it's necessary.
There's lots of groups in the US that retain distinct subcultures but are still Americans. Do you also consider the Amish complete foreigners just because they've retained some German elements? No, of course not.
They're all just different types of Americans. We have a shared melting pot culture called American culture but we can maintain an enriching cultural mosaic under that shared culture.

They're Americans, insofar as that term has lost all content and meaning after waves of immigration displaced Old Stock Northerners and left us Southerners on our own.
