ROC is comprised of nationalists. The issue is that the US recognizes the PRC as the rightful republic of China and they're ruled by another political party called the CCP. If China attacks them then they have an excuse to go independent, but Taiwan going independent is like a US state trying to break from the union. China already lets them have their own government and economy, they even have their own military. It's not the same thing like when the UK handed China their colony Hong Kong, Taiwan isn't a colony. I don't think China wants to give a special provision to Taiwan because there's so many provinces in China dying to break lose, it sets a shitty precedent for balkanization.
